We hope you are doing well and adjusting to the unique guidance and expectations we are experiencing as a result of our extended emergency school closure. This message is an update pertaining to the elementary school’s updated grading policy.
Students completed the 3rd 9 weeks on Thursday, March 12. After this date, participation/completion of assignments will not be for a grade. We strongly encourage your child to participate in off-site instruction so they can stay current on concepts and standards covered throughout the school year. Students have been assigned two (2) learning packets to-date. The second packet contained work assigned through May 1st. Teachers will continue to provide assignments via electronic platforms like Google Classroom, Zoom, Class Dojo, or others they may have used with their students this year. Check with your child’s teacher for details if you aren’t sure how to connect with them. If digital access is not available at home, new Independent Learning Packets will be available for pick-up at the entrance of each elementary school site beginning at 8:00am on Monday, May 4th through Wednesday, May 6th. Also during this time, parents can drop off completed packets.
Promotion and retention will be based upon the students’ performance for the majority of the school year (1st-3rd nine weeks). Grades will be assigned for the 4th 9 weeks using the semester average scores for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd 9 weeks. Averaging these scores will not decrease students’ final grades. These grades can only help students. Example of an elementary school student’s average for the 4th 9 weeks: 1st 9 weeks score = 75, 2nd 9 weeks score = 80, 3rd 9 weeks score = 88. 4th 9 weeks = (75 + 80 + 88) /3 = 81 4th 9 weeks. The second semester average will then be calculated using the average of 3rd and 4th 9 weeks report card scores. This will be completed for each course, reading, language arts, math, physical education, science, social studies, music, and visual arts.
