Teaching a child how to think is hard, but teaching a child how to care is even harder.
That’s the goal of the gifted teacher, Tara Felts who is coordinating a campaign with elementary students to raise can foods for the local animal shelter. She invited the Meriwether County Animal Shelter to visit with our students and teach students empathy by introducing them to an abandoned dog, and prompting the children to care for animals. We met a new friend, a border collie mix, with fluffy black fur and happy face. Animal Control Officer Wegienka spent time with our students teaching proper handling and care for puppies, dogs, and cats.
The visit was so much for the children, who enjoyed playing with the pup, but this was also an ethics lesson. The idea was to give lonely shelter animals companionship and simultaneously show children how to be compassionate. Make compassion your fashion!
